From NZ to Kyoto and Back Again...

Hey, how's it going? I'm Vinny, a 24-year-old translator living and working in Kyoto.
Growing up with the likes of Goku from Dragonball and Naruto from, well, Naruto, it was my dream to one day head to Japan and live the life of hikikomori. But then life got in the way and I somehow ended up with a deep interest in Japanese literature, psychology and second language acquisition.
You would think that with these interests–paired with a one year stint at a university of education in Kyoto– I would have naturally drifted towards a career in English teaching. But alas, that is not the case.
In 2019, after leaving Kyoto to finish my degree in New Zealand and then returning, I landed a job as a translator that's seen me work with some of the biggest names in media right now and some not so well known Kyoto-based companies as well.
Now, just over a year on from the initial entries into those jobs, I've learned more than I could have hoped for and been humbled more times than I can count.
Although translation has become a passion of mine and gives me great joy–as I get to do two things I love, read Japanese and spurt out long-form text–I am also plagued by the feeling that not pursuing a career in programming or web design in 2020 will leave me high and dry come the inevitable AI revolution.
So that's where I am, a little experienced in one thing, looking to delve into another.
