Right now I’m working as a consultant and working on branding and illustration concepts. I’m also working on the internal culture of the company and helping RS find it’s voice to share with other potential freelancers.
What is your background?
So I’ve been a bit of a jack of all trades since I graduated in 2013. I’ve done UX/UI, Branding, Graphic Design, Illustration, Book Covers, basically, anything I can get my hands on.
In Texas, I went to university from 2009 until 2013 and I started my design journey as an intern in Austin TX in the summer of 2013 and ended up with a really awesome opportunity to work in China and do international branding at a German agency. I left my family, dog, and tacos in Dec of 2013 to pursue my international dreams. After about 2 years of work, I headed back to America to focus on UX/UI work in 2016. I worked hard to understand user behavior and interaction of products and worked with USAA in order to help military members and their families during my time there. In 2018, I got an opportunity to do this type of work in Japan with the company that brought me out here. I was really missing branding, illustration, and all the things that got me excited about design; the art aspect. Art isn't Design, but Design can be Art (Although Design Twitter might disagree on this). So in March of this year I started to go freelance!!
I think the switching point for me going freelance was that fact that the output of work in-house was moving so slow, and I felt so tiny in my company. I wanted to make a bigger, more direct impact on peoples’ lives. I also wanted to actually make things again, digital is a super great attribute but I love drawing. I’ve switched to focus on Branding and Illustration and really love it and want to keep it like that.
How did you get in RS and what do you think about RS?
I was looking to move into freelance and wasn’t sure how I was going to survive in Japan as a first-time freelancer. I talked to a fellow mentor and he mentioned RS and I reached out to Roy, not really know what to expect or where I was going. The company is super flexible! I love that I can be so open to the team about my needs as a designer and I can share my outside work
